Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, 42 U.S.C. § 2000e, et seq. ("Title VII"), prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin and religion. Title VII also prohibits an employer from retaliating against an individual for opposing any employment practice that would violate Title VII, for filing a discrimination charge, or for assisting in the investigation of such a charge. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ("EEOC") is the designated Federal agency responsible for investigating individual charges of discrimination under Title VII. If you believe that you have been discriminated against in violation of Title VII, you should, if you have not yet done so, contact the EEOC to find out whether you may file a charge. The EEOC may be called toll-free at 1-800-669-4000 or 1-800-669-6820 (TDD), which will connect you to the EEOC office nearest you or you can find an office at http://www.eeoc.gov/field/index.cfm. It is important that a charge be filed with the EEOC as soon as possible, because a discrimination charge must be filed within a certain time period after the alleged discriminatory act occurred in order to be considered timely. Filing a charge with the Jefferson County AAO does not suspend the period for filing a charge with the EEOC
