Pre-Commission and Commission Meeting Highlights

During the County Pre-Commission Meeting, Maria Knight, Director of the Jefferson County Board of Equalization, discussed the closing of the property protests for the 2025 property valuations. Additionally, she provided some insight regarding the 7% CAP on property taxes.

If you are approved for the 7% CAP and not subject to exclusion, it will be applied to your “Assessed Value” and reflected on your tax bill in October. The Board of Equalization notice reflects the value based on market conditions year to year.

During Commission Meeting, Commissioners approved a resolution for Smart Wiz Wealth Group

A Public Hearing was held to approve an Incentive Agreement and Adoption of a Resolution to approve job incentives, keeping with the County’s typical policy of matching a two to one ratio with the County in an amount not to exceed $52,000. –

Smart Wiz Wealth Group is an existing IT company based here in Birmingham that focuses on software development for tax preparation where citizens can file directly to the IRS. With the help of these incentives they are looking to expand their business by adding an additional 60 to 70 new jobs.

Commissioners also approved a resolution to execute Amendment #1 to the Sub-recipient Agreement with the Jefferson County Economic Development Authority (JCDEIA) for the Barber Blvd Waterline Improvement Project. this will serve the new JeffMet North Industrial Park that is being developed. Lastly,

 

County Commissioners joined Commissioner Joe Knight and presented a congratulatory resolution to 2025 Miss Alabama Emma Terry. Commissioner Knight acknowledged the dedicated work and success of Miss Terry and one of her many Community Service Initiatives "Stomping Out ALS One Step at a Time" which she has contributed to helping raise well over a quarter million dollars and has garnered over 200,000 views on TikTok, all dedicated to ALS awareness. The Commissioners extend their sincerest gratitude for Miss Terry’s outstanding service and wish her much success during her year of service to the citizens of the State of Alabama and in her upcoming competition in the 2025 Miss America Pageant to be held in September.
